The North Presbyterian Church was founded in 1855 in what is now the Northside neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. After 166 of serving the community, the parish dissolved and North Church closed her doors. The building was then purchased by Florence Rothenberg, MD, in 2022.

Dr. Rothenberg is a cardiologist who has been caring for hearts in Cincinnati since 2006. She became frustrated by the fact that many of her patients did not have access to a healthy diet or have the ability to engage in regular exercise. Without these, she knew, achieving better health would be difficult, if not impossible.

Her company, Heart In Balance, LLC, purchased the 47,000 square foot property to transform it into a community health center with three goals:

  • improve access to fresh produce by growing it on site,
  • improve health literacy through classes and individual counseling,
  • improve community health through listening and outreach.

The three entities that comprise the Heart of Northside address these three goals:

Ounce of Prevention is a Preventive Medicine consultancy that offers both in-person and telemedicine services utilizing up-to-date research to identify a patient’s specific risk factors for heart disease and stroke. She then works with her patient with the goal of minimizing those risks.

Food For Thought Cincy is a rooftop farm that is currently in the design and fundraising stages of development. This initiative will improve community health by improving access to healthy food, teaching practical ways to prepare food healthfully on a budget, and improving community outreach to prevent heart disease, the number one killer of American women and men.

Dr. Rothenberg’s company, Heart In Balance, LLC, oversees event spaces and utilization of the beautiful and historic North Presbyterian Church building, now the Heart of Northside, to continue its tradition of bringing the community together. Social events, lectures on health and civics, and community meetings all take here, alongside like-minded tenants who also occupy spaces in the building.
